( FT. ADEEB ALAM ) I grew up in Varanasi, a city steeped in history and culture. Since 1950, My family is master in Weaving Banarasi sarees were renowned for their intricate designs and exquisite craftsmanship. The rhythmic hum of looms and the vibrant spectrum of silk threads formed the backdrop of my childhood. I spent countless hours watching my family members transform raw silk into luxurious sarees, mesmerized by the magic of their skilled hands. From a young age, I knew I wanted to be a part of this legacy. My fascination soon turned into a deep commitment to our family’s craft. However, I also understood the importance of innovation in preserving tradition. After completing my education I returned to business with a clear vision: to honor my father’s legacy while appealing to the modern woman. This vision gave birth to “Vaya Silk” a brand that symbolized the bridge between past and present. I began by introducing modern designs and color palettes, blending traditional motifs with contemporary patterns. I collaborated with young designers who shared my vision, creating sarees that were a perfect amalgamation of classic elegance and modern chic. Our collections featured everything from timeless Banarasi silks with delicate zari work to lightweight, breathable sarees ideal for everyday wear.
Embracing technology was another key aspect of my vision. Setting up an online store allowed us to reach a global audience. Social media became our platform to showcase the stories behind each saree, highlighting the craftsmanship and dedication of our weavers. Fair trade practices were a cornerstone of our business model, ensuring our artisans were paid fairly and provided with a supportive working environment.
Our efforts bore fruit. “Vaya Silk” quickly gained popularity, attracting customers from around the world. Fashion bloggers and celebrities soon flaunted our creations, and our sarees became a symbol of elegance and ethical fashion. Despite our success, I remained grounded, often spending long hours in the workshop, tweaking designs and ensuring the quality of each saree.
For me, “Vaya Silk” is more than a business. It is a testament to the enduring beauty of the Banarasi saree and the timeless art of weaving that my father lovingly passed down to me. Every saree we create is a tribute to my family and to all the artisans whose skill and dedication keep this tradition alive.
